How to Set the Line for Live Bait on a Catfish Rod
Setting the line for live bait on a catfish rod is very similar to using living bait for any type of fish. The major difference is that a catfish rod is longer and thicker than most other fishing rods. This extra weight and heft provides the rod with a stronger backbone, which helps with handling the larger fish that tend to feed in deep water.
Things You'll Need
- Catfish rod
- 10- to 15-lb. test fishing line
- 3 feet of 20- to 30-lb. test fishing line or wire leader
- Size 6 or size 8 circle hook
- ½-oz. sliding weight
- Double-ended swivel
- Catfish bait
Instructions
-
-
1
Tie the 10- to 15-lb. test line to a double-ended swivel with a ½-oz. sliding weight attached.
-
2
Tie 3 feet of leader, either 20- to 30-lb. test or wire, to the other end of the swivel.
-
-
3
Tie a size 8 circle hook to the end of the leader.
-
4
Firmly attach your choice of catfish bait to the hook.
-
5
Cast your bait to where you want it to land.
-
6
Wait at least three to five seconds for the fish to secure the bait in its mouth when you start to feel the line pull. A circle hook allows the hook to set itself as the fish swims away with the bait.
-
7
Close the bail of your reel and firmly lift the tip of your rod straight up. Reel in the fish.

Tips & Warnings
When fishing from a boat, you can use a lighter weight because it is easier to cast.
When fishing from the shore, the ½-oz. weight should be enough to cast your bait into the deeper parts. But you can use a heavier weight if needed.
Use larger hooks if you want to catch a larger fish.
