Make sure that you keep your flowering cherry tree watered and moist. In order to figure out whether or not the tree needs water, stick your index finger into the soil about three inches and see if it is wet. When it seems like it has begun to dry out, then it is time for it to be watered. Repeat this method a few times so that you can get an idea how often your tree should be watered.

Do not soak the roots of the tree all in one go. These types of trees tend to get root rot, and this will promote this sort of condition. Water a small amount every few hours to avoid this problem.

Keep your tree(s) fertilized by adding a fertilizer that contains potassium, nitrogen, and phosphate around the base of the tree in the early spring and again in the beginning of the summer. Make sure that you purchase a brand of fertilizer that is designed with cherry trees in mind.

Prune off dead or damaged wood and remove and destroy dead wood, leaves, and fruit around the tree in order to keep your cherry tree(s) healthy. Pruning should be done in the summer months in order to protect your tree(s) from the silver leaf disease. After you pruned off dead portions of the tree, apply a non-asphalt-based pruning paste to the areas that are still remaining on the tree; this will to provide an extra layer of protection again silver leaf.
