How to Apply for a Domain Name
A domain name is a term referring to an address for a website, but it can apply other Internet resources as well. In order for the website to be accessed via Internet, its name must be registered with a registrar, a company that serves as a necessary intermediary between the end-user and Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Such registration conveys the exclusive right to the individual, business, or organization, to use the unique domain name.
There are many domain name registrars to choose from, and prices can vary from 99 cents to $35 per year, depending on the domain (.org, .net, .into, .com, etc.) and the additional services or features offered. Some domain names -- the ones already taken -- can cost thousands of dollars, if the entity holding the rights wishes to sell.

Name selection and registration
-
1
Come up with a name you wish to give your website. Think of several different ones and even their variations, as you will find that many names are already taken and therefore unavailable.
-
2
Decide which extension you would like your website to have such as .com, .org, or .net. Think what primary purpose you want your site to serve and choose the extension accordingly. Also, while you may find the .com extension of your name is taken, others are still open for purchase.

3
Go to who.is to see if your name is available. If it already exists, the site also provides all the details pertaining to it, e.g., owner information and registration expiration. The site also offers alternatives to the name you had in mind, making the selection process easier.

When you're ready, find a reputable registrar by searching for "domain name registrar" on the Internet. Understand what each one has to offer and read reviews. Some of the most popular ones are register.com, 1and1 Internet, and godaddy.com.

5
Go through the registration process as guided by your chosen registrar's website. The registrar will test for availability and allow you to register a name only if it is available.
