How to Clear Memory on iPod

Your iPod lets you listen to music, watch videos and even surf the Internet while on the move. With all of those features, it's easy to bog down your memory with unwanted applications or music. Luckily, Apple created a simple process to clear memory on an iPod. All that's required is your USB cable and iTunes.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your iPod into a computer with the USB cable that came with your iPod. Make sure the computer has iTunes on it.

    • 2

Open iTunes and wait for your iPod icon to appear beneath the "Devices" section on the left side of the window. Click on your iPod once it appears. This will bring up a summary of your iPod in the main window.

    • 3

Click the "Restore" button. You'll then be prompted to select one of four restore options.

    • 4

Select a restore option. Refer to the Tips section below for explanations of each option.

    • 5

Wait for your iPod to complete the first stage of the restore process. A progress bar on your screen will track the process.

    • 6

Read the instructions on screen once the first stage completes. Depending on your model, you'll either have to disconnect your iPod or move on to the next stage, which requires you to wait for your iPod to complete the restore.

    • 7

Complete the setup wizard. Once the second stage completes, you'll be prompted to create a name for your iPod and select your sync preferences.

Tips & Warnings

  • "Restore" clears your memory and restores your iPod to the software on the iPod. "Use same version" restores the iPod to the same version loaded on the iPod even if a newer version exists. "Use newest version" restores the iPod with the latest software version. "Restore and update" does the same thing as the previous option.
