1
Measure the width and height of the bed and decide how high and wide the headboard should be. Headboards can be wider than the bed. An additional inch to inch and a half on either end works.
-
2
Choose shutters by visiting home remodeling, architectural ornament and recycled building material outlets and stores. Shutters do not have to be new but should not be deteriorating or rotted.
-
-
3
Assemble the shutters together by placing them face down on a solid surface. Place the shutters by aligning them one next to the other keeping the top of the shutters level.
-
4
Attach the shutters top and bottom using a mounting strip of 1-by-inch lumber. Cut the strips 2 inches shorter than the width of the headboard. Place a strip 4 inches from the top and the second strip 4 inches from the bottom. Use screws and attach each shutter twice with a screw centered in the vertical frame on each side of the shutter.
-
5
Refinish shutters by spray painting or staining both the back and the front of the shutter. Add ornamentation or decorative motifs if desired.
-
6
Mount the headboard to the wall using screws at each end of both mounting strips. Place screws so they enter through the shutter and mounting strip and directly into a stud in the wall. Use a level to assure and even mounting.
