How to Set a Wallpaper Screensaver on Windows Vista

Changing the wallpaper (or desktop background) and screen saver of your computer is one of the nice features Microsoft incorporates into their Windows Vista operating system. When setting the wallpaper, you may use any image or graphic recognized by Windows, and you may also choose from a range of pre-installed wallpapers. Vista also comes with a number of pre-installed screen savers for you to choose from and you may set custom photo slide shows and downloaded screen savers as well. Changing these settings is a simple operation in Windows Vista.

Instructions

  1. Setting the Wallpaper

      Open "Start > Control Panel > Appearance" and "Personalization > Personalization," then click on "Desktop Background."

      Click on the drop-down list next to "Location" and select "Windows Wallpapers" to view all the pre-installed wallpapers available. Once you have found the wallpaper you wish to use, click on it and press "OK" to set it as your desktop background. If you want to use a custom (not pre-installed) image located on your computer, continue to step 3.

      Right-click on the image you wish to use as your wallpaper and select "Set as Desktop Background" from the context menu. Your custom photo or graphic will now be set as your wallpaper.

    Setting the Screensaver

      Open "Start > Control Panel > Appearance" and "Personalization > Personalization," then click on "Screen Saver."

      Click on the drop-down list under "Screen saver" to view all the pre-installed screen savers available. Scroll through the available screen savers and select any screen savers you may want to use (one at a time), then press the "Preview" button to view it before setting it. Once you've chosen your screensaver, press "Apply," then "OK" to set it. If you want to set a photo slide show or a downloaded screen saver, continue to steps 3 and 4.

      Select "Windows Live Photo Gallery" from the "Screen Savers" drop-down list and then press "Settings." Press "Browse" to select the folder containing the photos you wish to be included in the slide show, then press "Save."

      Consult the documentation that came with your downloaded screen saver for instructions on how to install it to your computer. Once it's installed, follow steps 1 and 2 to set it as your screen saver.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is highly recommended that you do not download screen savers from unknown sites. It is very possible when doing this to download infected files that can damage your computer.
