How to Connect an HP Media Center Computer to a TV

Hewlett Packard computers bundled with Media Center software can be used for recording and editing television programming by connecting a TV to the PC using an S-video cable. The cable connection takes less than a minute. Once the two components are hooked up, the Media Center software must be configured to communicate with the TV. This is virtually an automatic process that requires no technical skill, merely the ability to point and click a computer mouse.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut down the computer and TV while making the cable connections.

    • 2

Plug the S-video cable into the S-video OUT jack on the back of the TV. The plug only inserts one way, with a notch on the end turned upward.

    • 3

Connect the other end of the cable to the HP computer's S-video IN port, located on the back of the central processing unit (CPU).

    • 4

Power up the computer and TV.

    • 5

Open the Media Center software by double-clicking the icon on the HP desktop.

    • 6

Click the "Settings" tab, then choose "TV" and highlight "Setup TV Signal."

    • 7

Click "Next," then highlight and click "Configure My TV Signal Automatically."

    • 8

Click "Next" to launch the Media Center's automatic configuration function, which may take several minutes to complete.

    • 9

Turn on the computer and television only after the S-video cable has been connected. This enables the computer to detect that new hardware has been attached to the system.
