How to Make a Pomander With Fresh Flowers
A pomander is a ball comprised of fragrant, natural materials. Historically, pomanders have been made with a variety of essences and strewn around the house, or even carried, to mask unpleasant odors. Many people are familiar with the pomanders made by piercing the surface of an orange with cloves. But pomanders can also be fashioned with fresh flowers. Fresh flower pomanders have a variety of uses; they work well as table centerpieces, hanging ceiling decorations, and handheld adornments. Floral pomanders are especially popular at weddings as both décor and accessories for flower girls. Does this Spark an idea?

Making a Fresh Flower Pomander
-
1
Obtain a floral foam ball that comes encased in green netting. Submerge the ball in water until it is completely saturated. Remove it from water and place it on a work table.
-
2
Cut several inches from the bottoms of all your flower stems. Place the flowers in a water-filled bucket so they can remain hydrated while you assemble the pomander.
-
-
3
Loop a ribbon through a piece of the ball's netting if you want to suspend or carry the pomander. Tie the loop in a knot. Push the knot down toward the surface of the foam ball so only a smooth loop of ribbon will be visible after the flowers are inserted.
-
4
Pull a flower from the bucket. Cut its stem to a length of 1 ½ to 2 inches. Push the shortened stem all the way into the foam ball, so that only the bloom is visible.
-
5
Repeat Step 4 until the entire surface of the foam ball is covered with flowers. Suspend the ball from a hook, rod, or helper's hands while you add the flowers to avoid turning it onto its side and crushing the flowers you have already inserted.
-
6
Mist the floral pomander with a gentle spraying of water to help the flowers stay fresh and hydrated.

Tips & Warnings
If you desire, insert small sprigs of greenery in the pomander as well as flowers.
Embellish the pomander with pearls or other beads. Insert a wire dipped in hot glue into the holes in the beads and push the wire into the foam.
Combine pomanders in varying sizes for a dynamic effect. You can purchase the floral foam balls in different sizes.
Use smaller flowers, such as baby roses, mini carnations, and daisy chrysanthemums, to cover the surface of smaller pomanders.
Use larger flowers, such as regular roses, gerbera daisies and full-sized carnations, on larger pomanders.
To make your fresh flower pomander extra fragrant, use strongly-scented flowers such as gardenias, stephanotis and tuberose.
