How to Remove Stubborn Soap Scum off the Bottom of a Fiberglass Bathtub

Fiberglass tubs are a popular fixture in homes and apartments due to their lightweight construction, economy and repairability. If you are diligent about cleaning your fiberglass tub each time you use it, you will not have an issue with soap scum residue. Yet, most people probably don't bother to clean their tub after each use, and some people don't make an effort to clean it until the soap scum seems to be ingrained in the surface of the fiberglass. Fortunately, stubborn soap scum can be removed with the right combination of supplies and effort.

Things You'll Need

• Vinegar
• Water
• Pot or container
• Stove
• Spray bottle
• Stiff scrubbing brush
• Baking soda
• Spoon
• Sponge
• Automatic dishwasher detergent

Instructions

Vinegar and Water

1. Mix up a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, heat on the stove top or in the microwave and pour into a spray bottle.

2. Spray the bottom of the tub with the heated solution and allow to remain for approximately 15 minutes.

3. Scrub the bottom of the tub with a stiff scrub brush and rinse thoroughly.

Baking Soda

1. Place 1 cup of baking soda into a container and mix with small amounts of water until it reaches the consistency of paste.

2. Use a damp sponge to apply the paste to the bottom of the tub. Rub the paste into the tub as you are applying it.

3. Allow the paste to remain on the tub for approximately 20 minutes. Use a stiff scrubbing brush to scrub away stains. Rinse the tub thoroughly.

Automatic Dishwasher Detergent

1. Close the bathtub drain or insert the stopper.

2. Mix 1/2 cup of automatic dishwashing detergent into a 2-3 gallons of warm water and pour the solution in the bottom of the tub.

3. Allow the solution to remain in the tub for 15-20 minutes. Scrub with a stiff scrubbing brush and rinse.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 if needed.

Tips & Warnings

• Clean your tub after each use to avoid a soap scum build-up.

• Never use harsh chemicals or abrasives on your fiberglass tub. This can result in scratches to the surface.
