How to Complete the Summoner Quest in Diablo 2

The Summoner quest is the fifth quest in Act II of Diablo II. The object of the quest is to kill the Summoner, the Sorcerer character from Diablo I. He has been driven mad by the battles he faced and is impersonating (or perhaps possessed by the spirit of) Horazon, a mage who summoned demons. Once you kill the Summoner, you will be able to access the portal to the Canyon of the Magi and find Tal Rasha's tomb.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete the Arcane Sanctuary quest, which requires you to fight through the Palace Cellar levels and open the portal to the Arcane Sanctuary. (In multiplayer mode, you can ask someone else to open a portal to the Arcane Sanctuary and activate the Waypoint there, giving yourself a way of getting in.)

    • 2

Explore the four branches of the Arcane Sanctuary. Each branch has a specific layout, although the locations change: 1) straight and flat, 2) turning in circles, 3) zig-zags and staircases and 4) teleporter pads.

    • 3

Locate the Summoner at the end of one of the four branches and kill him. The Summoner has no physical attacks, but does have a powerful cold attack. Ranged weapons are best.

    • 4

Note the six glyphs at the Summoner's location. These are the signs of the six false tombs; the seventh (missing) sign is the true Tomb of Tal Rasha, where you must go to complete the Act's final quest. (In later patches and the Lord of Destruction expansion, the sign of the true tomb will show up in your quest log.)

    • 5

Enter the portal to the Canyon of the Magi, where the Seven Tombs are located. Activate the Waypoint and return to town to officially receive the Seven Tombs quest from Jheryn.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Arcane Sanctuary's usefulness depends on the patch you have. In v. 1.08 and higher, the enemies have a stronger resistance to physical attacks, making the area more difficult for characters with weaker magic attacks. In earlier versions, it's a great area to gain experience and level up, since the narrow layout means you can't be swarmed by many monsters at a time.
