How to Create an X & Y Graph

X-Y graphs are a means of visually depicting data. To create one of these graphs, you'll first need to draw lines to represent the X-axis and the Y-axis on graph paper. These lines are then incrementally divided with appropriate numbering intervals that allow all data to be included. The point where axes intersect, (0,0), is called the origin. Data points are plotted by first going across the X-axis to find the X value and then up or down the Y-axis to find the Y value. Data tables are usually included next to the plotted graph for easy reference.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a sheet of unnumbered graph paper. Use graph paper to obtain equal spacing between numbering intervals on the X and Y axes. Graph paper can aid in accurately plotting data and thus help visualize data trends.

    • 2

Count how many data points you have. If you have a small data set, you can include it in column form on the graph paper for easy reference. If the quantity of data points far exceeds the number of horizontal lines on the graph paper, you may want to keep the data elsewhere.

    • 3

Add data onto the graph paper. Near the left edge of the paper, draw a vertical line long enough to accommodate all of the data points that you counted plus one. Make column headings, one column for X and one column for Y. Add data into the appropriate columns.

    • 4

Label the center point, or origin. Approximate the center of the graph paper where two lines intersect, and mark that point (0,0) as the origin.

    • 5

Create a Y-axis. Start at the origin, and draw a vertical line on top of one of the graph lines, extending it above and below the point equally. This is the Y-axis.

    • 6

Create an X-axis. Start at the origin, and draw a horizontal line over a horizontal graph line to represent the X-axis, making each side of the center point equal in length.

    • 7

Number the X-axis. Numbers to the right of the origin are positive, and numbers to the left are negative. Numbers can be marked off in increments of 1, 5, 10, 100 or whatever interval suits the plotting of your data. Number so that all of your data can be represented on your graph.

    • 8

Mark numbers on the Y-axis. Numbers above the center are positive, and numbers below the center are negative. Again, use suitable incremental numbering so that all data can be plotted.

    • 9

Plot the data onto a line graph. The first number of the coordinate represents the X, and the second represents Y. For instance, to plot the coordinate (10,80), move across to 10 on your X-axis and go up to 80 on your Y-axis.

Tips & Warnings

  • If no negative data exists, draw the X and Y axes as an L shape to accommodate only positive numbers.
