How to Clean a Lens on a Super 8 Camera

A Super 8mm camera is an old type of film-based motion picture camera that used to be marketed to the home user. Super 8 offers better quality than the standard 8mm film, but of course, the quality of the film image captured by a given camera has a lot to do with how well the camera lens is taken care of. With proper care, you shouldn't have much to worry about, except possibly a few cleanings in case dust, hair or other debris land on it.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a small flashlight to check the lens for dust or dirt.

    • 2

Blow any dust or dirt from the lens with an air blower. These are small devices with a circular hand grip that allows you to squeeze air out.

    • 3

If particles or hair remain stuck after blowing, remove them with a lens cloth (the same kind of cloth used for eyeglasses). Gently remove the particles from the lens and do not put too much pressure on the glass. Be sure not to touch the lens with your fingers while cleaning.

Tips & Warnings

  • When not filming, keep the cap on your Super 8 camera lens at all times. This will protect the lens from any foreign objects.

  • Do not use compressed air, because there is liquid in compressed air cans, and the air is expelled too powerfully. Also, refrain from blowing on the lens with your mouth. This will cause condensation on the lens, which is not desirable.

  • Do not touch the lens with your fingers while cleaning. This will leave oil on the lens, and oil is far harder to remove than dirt and dust.
