1
Measure the pine. Measure and mark with a pencil one piece that is 6 inches wide and 18 inches long for the base. Measure and mark two other pieces that are 6 inches wide and 8 inches long for the side pieces.
-
2
Use the saw to cut out your pine. Use any type of saw you have such as a chop saw, circular saw or even a regular hand held saw.

3
Stain all the pieces of the book rack. Use a rag and apply a stain that already has the finish in it. Stain one side of each piece of pine at a time. Allow the stain on that side to dry thoroughly. Flip the pieces over and stain the other side. Do not forget to stain the edges of the pine as well.
-
4
Allow the second side of stain to dry for 24 hours.
-
5
Use the screwdriver to attach two of the hinges to one of the side pieces. Make sure to attach the hinges so the side can fold down onto the base of the book rack.
-
6
Set the side piece on top of the base at one end of the book rack. Make sure the outside edges of the base and the side are flush.
-
7
Attach the other side of the hinges to the base.
-
8
Set the book rack on your desk and fill with books. Collapse the sides and store when it is not in use.

Tips & Warnings
Carve a design onto the outside of the side pieces to make your collapsible book rack a little more decorative.
Paint your book rack instead of staining for a different look. Paint all the pieces before attaching them together by the hinges.
This is a great project for the kids to do since it is so simple. Supervise during the sawing part, but other than that, you can let them do it themselves.
