How to Remove Wine Stains From Oriental Rugs
It's happened to many a party host. You invite some friends over and one of them spills a glass of wine on your beautiful and valuable Oriental rug. What makes matters even worse is Oriental rugs need to be cleaned with caution. It's often a good idea to take the rug to a cleaning specialist. If that's not feasible, try removing the stain yourself with some basic supplies. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- White cloth
- Paper towels
- Spray bottle
- Water
- Liquid dish soap
- White vinegar
- Newspaper
- Fan
- Hair dryer
- Vacuum

Lift as much wine out of the Oriental rug by blotting it with a clean white cloth or paper towels.

Spray water on the stain to dilute it.

Blot up the water with a white cloth or paper towels.

Spray a cleaning solution on the wine stain. Mix a few drops of a mild liquid dish soap with cold water, or mix white vinegar with cold water. The latter solution should have one tbsp. of vinegar for each cup of water.

Blot the cleaning solution from the rug with a white cloth. Continue blotting until all of the cleaning solution has been removed.

Spray the rug with cold water and blot up the water with a clean cloth or paper towels.

Dry the rug thoroughly. Place newspapers under the the rug if only a small part of the rug is damp. Dry the top of the rug with a fan or hair dryer set on cool. If a large part of the rug is sopping wet, hang the rug above the ground so air can circulate all around it.

Vacuum your Oriental rug after it is dry.

Tips & Warnings
Be aware you may have to repeat the cleaning process multiple times. Try not to get the rug sopping wet. Use only as much water as necessary.
Never scrub an Oriental rug. Scrubbing can spread the stain. Always blot the stain from the outside edge of the stain inward to avoid spreading the stain.
Never use strong detergents, carpet stain removers, bleach or ammonia solutions on an Oriental rug. These products can damage the fibers of the rug.
