How to Make Warm Pillows

Warm pillows are handmade pillows that have been filled with rice or other dry ingredients. The pillow can then be warmed in the microwave an placed on the body to relieve aches and pains. These soothing pillows can also warm up a cold bed on a winter's night. Regardless of how you use them, warm pillows are an easy craft project. Look for remnant fabric at your local fabric store for an inexpensive option.

Instructions

  1. Process

    • 1

Cut two rectangles from each of the different fabrics. The rectangles should measure 10.5- by- 21 inches.

    • 2

Put the patterned outside cover fabric aside.

    • 3

Fold the other rectangle in half lengthwise wrong sides together.

    • 4

Sew across all sides, leaving one side open. Use the smallest stitch possible to prevent rice or corn from slipping out. Pour in 4 cups of rice or dried corn. Add the optional dried herbs at this time as well. Sew up the final short end.

    • 5

Fold the outer cover in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin together the right sides of the fabric around the edges. Sew together the long sides. Leave the short ends open.

    • 6

Turn the outer cover inside out so that the pattern shows, and iron to remove any wrinkles.

    • 7

Insert the plain rice filled pillow into the outer cover. Pin and gather the edges of the short ends to form a seam of about 1/4 inch. Gather the edges of the interior pillow into these seams and pin together.

    • 8

Topstitch all of the layers together, one short end, then the other. This will prevent the interior bag from slipping.
