How to Vacuum Out In-Ground Swimming Pools
Vacuuming out an in-ground swimming pool requires about an hour of your time, but more if you have a very dirty pool. Keeping the pool clean and free of debris will keep the water safe for swimming and reduce the use of chemicals to fight the bacteria and algae. Before you start cleaning the pool, you need the correct equipment to do the job, and you must use the vacuum and hose correctly so that the vacuum works the way it was intended. Things You'll Need
- Vacuum head
- Extension pole
- Vacuum hose
- Skimmer plate
- Pool brush
- Pool net

Turn on the pool pump to filter. Use the pool brush and the extension pole to brush down the pool steps and the walls of the pool. Use a pool net to remove any floating debris.

Remove the pool brush from the extension pole and add the vacuum head. Connect the vacuum hose to the vacuum head. Place the skimmer plate on the other end of the vacuum hose.

Place the vacuum hose in the water while holding the end with the skimmer plate on it. Walk the hose over to the skimmer basket. Sink the skimmer plate under water and allow the hose to fill with water.

Remove the skimmer basket lid and the basket from the skimmer. After the hose is filled with water, place your other hand over the skimmer plate hole and quickly plate the plate on the skimmer. Note: Keeping the water in the hose will prevent air from getting into the hose and interrupting the suction.

Use the extension pole attached to the vacuum head to glide the head along the bottom of the pool. Move slowly and you will see the hose vacuuming up the debris. Keep the vacuum on the floor of the pool at all times.

Remove the vacuum head and hose from the water when done. Replace the skimmer basket and lid. Turn the pool pump to automatic cycle.
