1
Decide where your path should go.Should it be over an already worn area in your lawn that has naturally made itself a path? Do you want it to wind, passing by points of interest or other spots in your garden? Decide the route and sketch it on a piece of paper.

2
Be sure to plan your path in a space that is not at the bottom of a hill, or in a place where rain water will drain, this can damage the stone and cause the area around the path to be soft and muddy after a storm.

3
Decide on how big you want the stones to be, depending on the desired size of the path. Stones should be at least twice as wide as the length of your feet for comfortable movement on the path.
-
4
Decide on the kind of stone that you will need for the path. You may want to visit a garden or home repair store to get a sense of the many available options.
-
5
Get accurate spacing for each stone by measuring your stride with a measuring tape. With wet feet walk across a concrete floor and measure the distance between foot prints. The marks your feet make are the center measurement of your stride. Plan to have the center of each stone be this distance away from the next one.
