How to Make an Automatic Christmas Tree Watering System

Watering your Christmas tree can be a pain, because you'll often need to move gifts out of the way and risk breaking ornaments to reach the tree stand base. You can create your own automatic Christmas tree watering system using a few simple household items. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Drill two ¼-inch holes in the jug's screw cap. Fill the jug with water and replace the screw cap on the jug.

    • 2

Insert one end of the plastic tubing into one of the holes in the jug's screw cap. Thread the end of the hose through the cap so that it reaches the bottom of the jug.

    • 3

Place the other end of the plastic tubing into the base of the tree stand, making sure it reaches the bottom. Secure the plastic tubing to the rim of the tree stand rim using the strapping tape.

    • 4

Position the jug so it is level with the tree stand. Plug the second hole on the screw cap with your finger and gently squeeze the jug. Water should fill the plastic hose and fill the base of the tree stand. Remove your finger and water will continue to flow by siphon action.

    • 5

Refill the jug when the water level gets below 2 inches in the bottom of the jug.

Tips & Warnings

  • To disguise the water jug as a present under the Christmas tree, simply place a cardboard box that has the bottom cut out over the jug and cover the box with wrapping paper.

  • Keep all electrical light connections away from the base of a tree stand that contains water. Use the strapping tape or zip ties to secure the light wire going to the wall outlet to one of the back branches on the tree.
