How to Prune Pia Hydrangeas
The Pia hydrangea, or Hydrangea macrophylla "Pia," is considered a "big leaf" hydrangea. The Pia is a small variety of hydrangea, growing to only 2 or 3 feet in height and width. Because the Pia hydrangea's flowers bloom on old wood, you'll need to prune it somewhat differently than other types of hydrangeas, to avoid pruning away next season's flower buds. Prune in the early spring, when the Pia hydrangea just begins to come out of dormancy. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Cut away and remove all dead canes, cutting them down to the ground. If you have many living canes that are three years old or older, cut down 1/3 of them to the ground.
-
2
Prune away any weak or curving branches that lay on the ground. Cut them back to the main stem.
-
-
3
Snip off any old remaining flowers. Cut back all the other live canes down to the top pair of buds.
-
4
Inspect the Pia hydrangea for any stems that are sticking up or jutting out from the rest of the canes. Prune those stems back to a pair of buds so that they are the same length as the surrounding canes.

Tips & Warnings
Keep in mind that when you prune away living canes with the buds, you will reduce the number of blooms that will grow during that season.
Don't try to control the shape or size of your Pia hydrangea by pruning. The growth will simply reemerge during the growing season, so you should prune for appearance's sake only.
