How to Find a Golf Club Swing Speed

The most accurate way to determine your golf club swing speed is to visit a golf retailer or driving range that has a swing analyzer. You can also purchase swing speed meters that attach to the shaft of the club. However, if you are at the driving range or on the course, you can get a good estimate of your swing speed using a fairly simple formula.

Instructions

    • 1

Hit the ball. It sounds simple, but you want to make sure you use a good shot to do the calculations. There is no sense in trying to determine your swing speed on a ball you sliced, hooked hit fat or thin.

    • 2

Measure the distance of your shot. This shot should be one of your drives. The loft of the club will affect the distance, and you should get the most distance and the most accurate estimate from your driver.

    • 3

Subtract 5 percent from the total distance of your shot to account for any roll. This will give you your carry distance.

    • 4

Divide the carry distance by 1.75 to determine your ball speed. The ball speed is how fast the ball is traveling as it leaves the face of the club. A drive of 250 yards would equate to a ball speed of 143 mph.

    • 5

Divide the ball speed by the smash factor of 1.5. This will result in your swing speed. In the case of a 250-yard, carry the swing speed is approximately 95 mph.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't be discouraged by low swing speeds. The average golfer has a swing speed in the mid-80s.

  • The loft of your club, type of shaft, type of ball, spin on the ball and various other factors can affect the distance of your shot. Estimating your swing speed is helpful, but knowing it exactly, through the use of an analyzer, is recommended.
