How to Remove Windows XP Uninstall Files

When you upgrade your operating system to Windows XP using an upgrade patch instead of a new installation of Windows XP, the operating system saves the files you'll need later if you decide you don't want to keep the Windows XP upgrade. With those files, you can uninstall the XP upgrade, and return to your previous operating system. However, if you decide to keep the Windows XP upgrade, you can remove the Windows XP uninstall files completely.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the "Start" menu, and then select "Control Panel." This opens the Control Panel.

    • 2

Double-click on the "Add or Remove Programs" icon. This opens the Add or Remove Programs dialog box.

    • 3

Select the "Windows XP Uninstall" item in the list of currently installed items in the dialog box. Click on the "Remove" button to open the Software Update Removal wizard.

    • 4

Click on "Remove the backup of my previous operating system" in the wizard, and then click on the "Continue" button.

    • 5

Click on the "Yes" button when the following confirmation message appears: "If you remove the backup of your previous operating system, you will no longer be able to uninstall Windows XP. Are you sure you want to remove the backup?" The wizard deletes the uninstall files to complete the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you remove the Windows XP uninstall files, you won't be able to revert to your previous operating system.
