Instructions

    • 1

Transfer the photographs onto your local hard drive or external hard drive, into a new photo directory. I create a new directory after each photo session based on date.

    • 2

Within this new directory, create a subdirectory for your soon-to-be resized image thumbnails. I use THUMBS as the name of this new directory.

    • 3

Download and install the free photo editing software, Irfanview available at: http://www.irfanview.com/

    • 4

Locate the photos you want to resize on your local or external hard drive. Highlight just one of the images and select to open it with Irfanview. (in Windows, click on the image, right click and choose, Open With ... Irfanview).

Click on File, Batch Conversion / Rename. Initially, you need to set up the default settings for the image resize Advanced options. Check the box that states USE ADVANCED OPTIONS and click on the ADVANCED button. This advanced screen may seem overwhelming, but you it's really not. You are only interested in the RESIZE area. Check the RESIZE box and select SET NEW SIZE. For my purpose of resizing images for eBay, I select SET LONG SIDE TO: and enter 400 in the box and select PIXELS. You can choose any size you want, but this is what works for me. Always check the Preserve aspect ratio to keep the image proportional when while resizing. That's it. Click on OK to close the advanced options window and continue. You will only need to complete this step once, the first time. After that, any batch conversions will be completed using these settings.

On the right hand size of the Batch Conversion window, it will prompt you to select the images you want to resize. Navigate to the photos on your computer and select the images, then click ADD. This will add the images under the INPUT FILES box.

    • 7

Near the middle of the left side of the BATCH CONVERSION window, select where you want the Output directory for result files to be. This should be the THUMBS directory we created in step 2. Click START BATCH and the free photo software, Irfanview, will get to work resizing the images.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the original file names the same within the main and new subdirectory, thumbs. This makes it easy to tie the thumb with the original image, if necessary.

  • Be careful of the "overwrite" checkbox within the Advanced Options tab. Checking this box will overwrite the original file.
