With the changes enacted by the Department of Homeland Security, a regularly issued Washington state Drivers License/ID Card is not enough to return to the United States from Canada. Of course a passport will suffice, but getting a Washington Enhanced Drivers License or ID Card is cheaper and much faster.

Instructions

      Visit your local Department of Licensing. You must bring cash or check as the DOL doesn't not accept credit or debit cards.

      Provide Proof of US Citizenship. Three documents are accepted as proof, and only one is required: Original birth certificate, US Passport (valid or no more than 5 years expired) or certificate of naturalization.

      Provide proof of identity. Any one of the following will serve as proof: Military ID, valid US passport or valid state issued drivers license.

      Provide proof of Washington State Residency. A number of documents will provide proof, such as utility bills or homeowner's insurance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Arrive no later than 30 minutes before the end of the business day at the DOL when applying for an EDL Drivers License/ID Card.
