How to Pass the Nclex-RN With Test Taking Strategies
The Nclex-RN is an examination you have to take and pass in order to become a licensed registered nurse who can actually get a job and work. No matter how much you prepare, there is the possibility that you may run into questions you are not familiar with. This is where using test taking strategies comes in.

1
Read the question two times to make sure you understand what the question is asking especially when you dont know the answer.
-
2
Look at the available options. Eliminate those that seem as if they are alike e.g tachycardia and hypertension.
-
-
3
Look at the remaining two answers. Based on your knowledge, one of them may be associated with something you know is unrelated to the question you are trying to answer. Eliminate that option and pick the last answer left.
-
4
Another strategy is to look at the options and based on your knowledge, elimininate all the wrong answers and pick whatever is left even if you dont know if its right.
-
5
An additional strategy is to look at the available answers and group similar items together and pick the odd one out. An example is 3 nursing interventions that are for the same issue and a totally different one for the same issue.
-
6
Study your infection control religiously. Know what precautions need to be taken with various diseases and always remember universal precautions is for every patient regardless of diagnosis.
-
7
Write down the names of all the drugs in your nclex book and what they are used for. This will help you atleast recognize the function of any drugs you get on the test and its expected outcome.
-
8
When in doubt, pick the answer that looks like the most severe problem or the most important intervention. This has nothing to do with the ABC's of nursing, prioritization or delegation.
-
9
Dont rush the exam. You have six hours for 75 or 265 questions. Take your time to read and debate in your mind, if you find a question tricky.
