      Start by building a platform for your gas fireplace insert. Make this big enough so you have a hearth. Set your fireplace insert. Hook up all ventilation and gas lines. Hook up all wiring to insert.

      Build desired frame around fireplace. Sheet with 1/2 inch or heavier plywood. Cover plywood with a 15# felt or a wrap designed for rock. Apply wire mesh including corners. This should be put on so wire holds the spec mix. Nail every 6 inches.

      Mix spec mix designed for rock veneers in a 5 gallon pail. You can use a heavy drill and a whip for this. Apply a thin layer of specmix to the wire mesh. This layer will be about a 1/4 inch thick. Let this dry completely.

      Start by opening up all rock boxes and spreading out so you can mix sizes and colors. Start at the top and apply rock. Using a trowel apply mud to back of rock. Push rock onto wall twisting a little. Hold for a few seconds, rock should be set. Choose rocks that fit togethet fairly well. Apply rock from top to bottom. At bottom you can cut rock to fit with a diamond blade in a skill saw. Let rock dry. Grout rock using a groutbag. smooth with tuck tool or rubber glove and your finger. Clean off with a brush. There is hearth stones for hearth or tile also work well.
