How to Use Bloom's Taxonomy

How to Use Bloom's Taxonomy thumbnail
Bloom's taxonomy identifies levels of learning.

Bloom's taxonomy is a categorization of the levels of learning and thought processes. It shows the progression of learning from simple remembering of information to understanding, application, analysis, evaluation and creativity. Using Bloom's taxonomy will prepare students for a world that demands more than textbook knowledge.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine whether information is rote or if there is real understanding. A student might be able to remember information or copy an answer from a book, but real understanding requires her to be able to put it in her own words or explain it.

    • 2

Require a student to apply that information to a variety of life situations that are different but similar. This demonstrates being able to use and generalize information. Math word problems are an example of the application of the concepts and skills that were learned.

    • 3

Provide opportunities for the student to take that information and analyze it. This can be done with categorization -- using semantic diagrams, for example -- or organizing the information. Students also could break down the information and explore it in depth. "Why" and "how" questions also help to promote analysis of information.

    • 4

Conduct experiments or take other avenues to use information in a way that will allow the student to critically evaluate it. Current news events, social situations and health concerns also provide opportunities for students to evaluate information.

    • 5

Develop creativity. Have the student put things together to form new concepts, designs or items. He can reorganize information or items and make or build things. He also can make involved plans and designs. Challenge the student to be innovative with new strategies or approaches.
