How to Start a Bat Rolling Service

How to Start a Bat Rolling Service thumbnail
A properly rolled bat can result in greater distances when hitting a softball or baseball.

Bat rolling is the process of artificially simulating the effect that hitting a baseball or softball has on a bat over time. Bat rolling services use machines known as bat rollers to compress fiber and aluminum bats, enlarging their sweet spots and allowing players to make longer hits without the need for additional force in their swings. Starting a bat rolling service allows you to help players customize their bats in hopes of achieving improved performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a bat-rolling machine. Different models allow for different options, such as rolling the bat with rollers placed across its width or with rollers down its length. Some bat rolling machines allow use of both configurations, though these machines are typically more expensive.

    • 2

Learn how to use your bat-rolling machine, practicing with low-cost composite fiber and aluminum bats before attempting to take on paid jobs. Improper rolling can damage bats or result in the rolling having very little effect, so it is important that you know how to use your rolling machine well before you start offering a service with it.

    • 3

Draft a service agreement for customers to read and sign before rolling their bats for the first time. Include information on the service you perform, the cost of having a bat rolled, limitations to your liability in case of damage to the bats and any satisfaction guarantees or other insurance that you offer.

    • 4

Advertise your service. Post flyers on public announcement boards, especially those at or near baseball fields or other sports facilities. Place ads in the "Services" section of your local newspaper's classified listings. Create a website or advertise your service using online bulletin board systems.

    • 5

Have first-time customers sign a service agreement and answer any questions they might have about the process. Try to keep a consistent turn-around time so that customers can have their bats rolled while they wait, ensuring you don't rush your work and run the risk of damaging the bats. Keep records of all transactions and provide receipts for your customers at the time of payment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place painter's tape on the bat to prevent marks left on it by the bat-rolling machine. The tape insulates the bat surface to protect it from damage but doesn't interfere with the compression and rolling process.

  • Rolled bats may not be allowed in all leagues or sports organizations. Do not make claims about the legality of rolled bats unless you have proof they are legal or illegal in specific leagues or organizations, as making false claims can lead to complaints or lawsuits.
