Learning their names helps children to establish their identities.

Toddlers are sponges when it comes to learning information. They are often excited to learn new things, especially since everything is new to them. Learning to spell their names can also be a source of fun, especially if parents present it that way. It is important that young children learn about letters, especially the letters that make up their names, in order for them to excel in kindergarten and beyond.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach the child the alphabet. Sing it along with her, then practice saying it instead of singing it. It may be easier for the child to learn the alphabet if you slow the song down and enunciate each letter to her.

    • 2

Show the child what letters look like. Use either alphabet toys or books and point to the letters as you sing or say them. By repeating them over and over, the three year old will make the connection that the letters he is saying or singing actually have shape and form.

    • 3

Explain to the child that every letter has a sound and shape and that they can be used to spell out words and names. Show the child which letters spell out her name using the toys or the book. Show her how you write out the letters of her name. Then, practice saying and writing just the first letter of her name. Let them know that they are learning just the first letter and ask them what that letter is throughout the day. Repetition will help her to remember.

Add on the second letter of your child's name once he can easily recall the first. Ask him what the first two letters of his name is and have him point out the letters whenever they spot them. For example, if the first two letters are "J" and "O", spend time searching books, labels and toys for those first two letters. Have your child say the letters, write the letters, and identify the letters. Do this, with the entire name, adding letters as you go.

Have your child say her name, then spell, then say it again. Help her practice writing the letters of her name. Periodically asking her to spell the name will also help her remember.
