How to Make Potholders with Cotton Potholder Loops
Step back in time and make potholders with cotton potholder loops. This fun craft is great for kids of all ages. Even the youngest children can help an older sibling or parent by helping choose the loops by color. Older children can learn patience by mastering the weaving technique needed to make potholders. A parent may have to finish the edges for some children.
Things You'll Need
- Potholder loom
- Cotton potholder loops or nylon loops
- Crochet-type potholder hook

1
Select the colors for your potholders. Use all-cotton loops or all-nylon loops because of how they each shrink when pulled off the potholder loom.
-
2
Place the loops onto the loom. Do all of one side, across, by placing one end of the loop on a peg and stretching the loop across to the opposite side of the loom and placing the other end of the loop on the peg directly across from it. Fill the loom with loops going in one direction.

3
Place a strong, thick rubber around the loom on each side of the loom to hold the loops in place.
-
4
String the loops in the opposite direction. This process involves weaving the second set of loops through the first set. Use the hook to place the loop on the hook end and pull it through the row of loops on the loom. Alternate going over and under the loops on the loom.
-
5
Continue weaving the loops through the loops on the loom frame. Alternate top and bottom to create a woven pattern until the second set of loops is on the frame.
-
6
Take one loop off on the edge of the loom. Slip the hook through the loop. Take the loop next to it off and place it on the hook. Slip the first loop on the bottom through the first loop on top to lock it in place. Place the next loop on the hook and repeat until all of the loops are off the loom and secured by this crocheting type method. Remove the rubber bands from the loom as needed.
-
7
When the last loop is on the hook, slip it through the previous loop to secure it or sew it down so it does not unravel.

Tips & Warnings
Recycle your old socks. Use the tops of old, clean socks to make your own cotton loops. Cut strips off the tops. Judge the stretch to make sure they'll work to make potholders.
