How to Caulk in Narrow Spaces

Caulking refers to the process of applying a sealant to exposed seams, joints or gaps on various surfaces. The purpose of caulk on indoor and outdoor applications is to provide insulation that prevents leakage, contamination and airflow. Caulking in narrow spaces can often be a challenge given the limited allowance of movement, but luckily the proper tools and the right method can ease the process. A caulking gun can be inserted into these small workspaces to effectively apply the sealant.

Things You'll Need

• Protective gloves
• Caulk
• Caulking gun
• Moist cloth

Instructions

1. Ensure that the narrow workspace is well-ventilated before proceeding with the caulk. Open a window if the targeted surface is indoors.

2. Wear a pair of protective gloves to avoid direct contact with the sealant. Working on a small area may get messy, and caulk is extremely difficult to remove from skin.

3. Load a cartridge of the appropriate sealant in a caulking gun. Caulk can normally be applied straight from the tube, but a caulking gun will extend your reach and increase your accuracy when sealing the exposed seams.

4. Make sure the targeted surface is free of any loose dirt or residue. Squeeze a bead of caulk no more than 1/4-inch thick directly into one end of the seam.

5. Moisten your index finger with a damp rag and glide it along the seam to evenly smooth the caulk if you can. Otherwise, run the caulking gun along the entire length of the seam and allow the caulk to cure as-is.

6. Allow silicone and butyl rubber caulk to cure overnight. Wait two to three days before attempting to paint over polyurethane caulk.
