How to Make Baseball Cap Cases

Baseball memorabilia has been popular almost as long as the game itself. Throughout generations, kids and adults alike have collected baseball cards, cultivating huge sets of mementos. As popular as baseball cards, autographs have been sought after for decades. Kids still wait for players long after games are through just for their signature. A popular place to receive an autograph is on a baseball cap. After the autograph is received on a cap, precautions must be taken to ensure the hat is safe. Building a baseball cap case is one way to safely organize a hat while putting it on display.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase six pieces of fiberglass from a local hardware store. Have the store cut the fiberglass to the specs you have laid out for your case. For an adult cap, use four pieces that are 13 inches long and 7 inches wide. To enclose the case completely, you will also need two pieces that are 7 inches by 8 2/3 inches. The fiberglass should be 2 cm thick.

    • 2

Lay one of the 13-by-7 pieces on a table. Squeeze a thin line of glue lengthwise on the edge of the fiberglass from one end of the piece to the other. Take another 13-by-7 piece and place it standing up at a 90-degree angle on the line of glue. The table should be next to a wall; you will have to lean the fiberglass case against the wall so it can dry straight.

    • 3

Place the two connected pieces against the wall so that the piece standing up is straight and can dry without falling over. Let the glue dry for 30 minutes and repeat Step 2 for the opposite wall of the case. When finished gluing the opposite wall, lean this connection against the wall as you did for the first one. Let this piece dry.

    • 4

Connect the roof of the case by applying glue to the top of both standing walls of your baseball cap case. For this step, just lay the roof on the glue and let dry. You do not need to lean the case against anything--gravity will ensure that the roof dries straight. Let the roof dry for half an hour or more.

    • 5

Stand the case on one end and attach one of the 7-by-8 2/3 pieces to the open end of the case using glue. Once again, gravity will ensure this piece dries correctly.

    • 6

Insert a baseball cap into the case through the remaining open end. Stand the case on end so that the remaining open end is facing the ceiling. Lay glue on the top of all four fiberglass pieces. Place the last piece of fiberglass on top of the case, sealing it shut. Let this piece dry for a half an hour.

    • 7

Lay the cap case on a table or mantle with the bottom of the cap facing downward.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can remove any excess glue with a razor blade.

  • Avoid wood glue; it will not bond fiberglass effectively.

  • Industrial-strength glue is extremely effective and hard to remove. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

  • If you ingest any glue, call poison control services.
