How to Make Buttercream Gardenia Flowers
Gardenias are among the most prized of flowers. Their fragrance is intoxicating and virtually impossible to replicate in all its beauty, though many perfumers have tried. In addition to their heady scent, gardenias possess visual appeal, with their white, almost wax-like petals and pleasant round shape. They are popular for use in corsages, hair adornments and bridal bouquets. Sometimes, however, the need to make gardenias coordinate with other flowers or with clothing overrides the desire for their breathtaking odor. In such cases, it is possible to change their color at the expense of their perfume. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions

-
1
Cover a work surface with newspaper, butcher paper or another protective layer.
-
2
Pull off the artificial leaves that come attached to most gardenias purchased from florists. Simply slide them off the gardenias' short stems. For a natural look, give only the flowers a buttercream tint, not the leaves.
-
-
3
Arrange the gardenias on your work surface so the petals face upward.
-
4
Shake the can of floral spray paint vigorously for several moments. Spray some of the paint on the newspaper or other object to gauge how much of it will come out, and how far away you should stand before applying it to the gardenias.
-
5
Hold the can at least 6 inches from the gardenias for a very light hint of color. Move the can closer to achieve a deeper shade of buttercream. Avoid creating unsightly drips with too heavy an application of paint.
-
6
Move the spray can in a back and forth motion as you apply the paint to ensure an even application of color. Do not hold it in one spot.
-
7
Allow the paint to dry for five to seven minutes. Do not touch or move the gardenias while the paint is drying.
-
8
Replace the artificial leaves back onto the gardenia stems if desired.

Tips & Warnings
Gardenias bruise very easily. To avoid adding blemishes and bruises to these fragile flowers, handle them as minimally as possible during the painting process.
Do not use any type of spray paint other than that which is specifically designated for flowers. Other types may harm the gardenias.
Note that applying color to the gardenias will greatly alter their scent.
Wear a protective mask to avoid inhaling fumes from the floral spray paint.
