Instructions

    • 1

Purchase coconut liners and hanging wire garden baskets from garden supply stores. If you already have the wire baskets, measure their dimensions before you go so that you can purchase the appropriate liners to fit.

    • 2

Determine where you'll place your filled coconut hanging baskets. Depending on what you're planting, you'll need a location that is in full or partial sun. Nail a small nail or an S-hook into the beams of a porch ceiling, using a stepladder for added height. You can also purchase coconut liners for window boxes; these may need to be installed in the window frame.

    • 3

Place the coconut liners inside the hanging baskets. Fill the baskets one-third of the way with potting soil.

    • 4

Remove your plants from their plastic containers and gently break apart the root ball with your fingers. Place the plants inside the coconut liners. Fill the rest of the basket with potting soil, taking care not to press down too hard.

    • 5

Water the plant. This will help compact the soil. Allow the plant to remain on the ground for several minutes, until any extra water has drained out the bottom of the coconut liner. Hang the plant from the nail or S-hook.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may wish to remove plants from their hooks every time you water them, since the water will flow out the bottom and can make a mess.

  • You'll notice coconut liners get ratty after a couple of seasons. This is natural; when they start looking messy, purchase new liners and re-plant your baskets.
