How to Take a Speech Course Online

In an age where entire universities exist solely on the World Wide Web, it's never been more convenient to expand your education. While some courses, such as English literature or graphic design, seem like a natural fit to the online world, a public speaking class offered on the internet, in the privacy of your home, seems like a less ideal method. However, aside from the difference in technology, you'll find that the curriculum and subject matter are nearly identical to a traditional classroom environment. Other than possibly needing a digital recorder, you should be able to get through the entire course with nothing more than your computer and the internet.

Instructions

  1. Taking the Class

    • 1

Go to your local community college (if not already enrolled in a college or university), and register for an online speech class. An academic adviser will be able to help you pick one if you have difficulty deciding.

    • 2

Log onto your class and follow the curriculum outlined by the teacher. Treat it as if you were in an actual classroom, which means taking notes, meeting all deadlines and completing all homework assignments.

    • 3

Record speech assignments using a personal digital recorder or webcam (whichever is instructed by the teacher).

    • 4

Critique your classmates' speeches by downloading their video files from the course website. Some teachers may give you the speeches contained on CD-ROM. Just place the disc in your computer's CD drive and watch.

    • 5

Prepare for any public speaking assignments by contacting your local community groups and requesting an audience in which to give a speech (unless you were instructed differently by the teacher).

    • 6

If your online class is a hybrid (part online, part in the classroom) prepare to give your final speaking assignment in front of other students in the classroom. If it's only online, set up another public speaking appearance and tape it. Then turn in the video as your final project.
