How to Acquire a Used iPod & Transfer Music

You don't need a new iPod to enjoy all the features that the iPod has to offer. Used iPods can be bought online via any number of Internet retail sites, as well as personal sales sites such as Craigslist. Once you've purchased a device, it takes only a matter of minutes to begin transferring music onto it.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a used iPod. Internet sites such as eBay offer used iPods in a number of models. (See the Resources for links.)

    • 2

Connect the iPod to your computer using a USB cable. IPods require a special USB cable to connect it to a computer. These cables can be purchased online at the Apple Store or at most electronics retailers.

    • 3

Open iTunes on your computer. Locate the iPod icon in the left-hand navigation menu.

    • 4

Transfer all songs and playlists in iTunes with your iPod. By default, when you connect the iPod to your computer, it will automatically transfer (download) all songs and playlists in your iTunes library .

    • 5

Transfer music from selected playlists. If your iTunes library is too large to fit on your iPod, you can transfer only selected playlists. In the navigation menu, select your iPod, click on the Music tab, select "Sync music," and click "Selected playlists."

    • 6

Transfer one or several songs at a time. If you would rather manually transfer music to the device, select your iPod in the iTunes navigation menu, click Summary, and select "Manually manage music and video." Click Apply.

    • 7

Click on a song in your iTunes library to manually drag it over to the iPod icon in the navigation menu to add a copy of the song to your device. You can similarly click and drag several songs at once by highlighting them in your iTunes library. Similarly, you can click and drag entire playlists to your iPod.

Tips & Warnings

  • Every iPod model is different. Be sure to ask the seller how much memory the device features. The more memory, the more songs you can store on the device.

  • When you connect your iPod to your computer for the first time, you will be prompted with a message asking if you want to sync all songs automatically. Choosing this option will instantly clear any media that might already be on the iPod.
