How to Insert a Picture Into a Symbol Library

You can create small, but high quality animated files for the web using Flash. Pictures can take up a lot of file space. However, when an image is converted to a Flash symbol, the file size is reduced. You can use the symbol multiple times by creating instances of the image throughout your design. Flash lets you add interactivity, scripting and transitions to those images. The following instructions are specific to Flash 8 Professional, but the process can be used for other versions of Flash as well.

Instructions

  1. Option 1

    • 1

Open Flash by going to "Start, All Programs, Macromedia, Macromedia Flash 8." To open an existing Flash document, select "Open a Recent Item" or select "Create New" if it's a new document.

    • 2

Click on "File, Open" and find the pictures you want to use. Once you've selected the file you need, double-click it to load it on your Flash stage.

    • 3

Select the photo you want to insert into your library and convert it to a symbol by pressing F8 or "Modify, Convert to Symbol."

    • 4

Choose the type of symbol you want--movie clip, button or graphic. Then click "OK." The image will be automatically inserted into the library as a symbol.

    • 5

Open the library if it's not already open by selecting "Window, Library" from the toolbar ("Ctrl+L" for Windows or "Cmd+L" for Mac) and view the symbol there.

    Option 2

    • 6

Import the picture you want to insert into your symbol library by clicking on "File, Import, Import to Library."

    • 7

Select one or more files to import, then click on "Open" in the "Import to Library" dialog box. The photo will automatically be loaded into the library. Now, follow Step 5 from Option 1 to view the images in the library.

    • 8

Use your mouse to drag the image from the library and move it to the stage. Convert the photo into a symbol following steps 3 and 4 from Option 1.

    Option 3

    • 9

Share and insert image symbols from one Flash document to another by opening up both Flash files.

    • 10

Drag the symbol (from the library) of the photo you're copying and place it in the file you want to use it in. You will see the library symbol in the second file now.

    • 11

Save the file by clicking on "File, Save" and choosing "Save."
