How to Increase Sperm Growth

According to the Mayo Clinic, it's estimated that 10 to 15 percent of American couples are infertile. In about half of these cases, it's the male that can't produce enough healthy sperm to fertilize the egg. Fortunately, you can reverse low sperm count. Sometimes, it's as simple as taking vitamins or changing your underwear.

Things You'll Need

  • Boxer or boxer brief underwear (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Wear loose underwear. Heat elevates your core body temperature, which impairs sperm production and lowers sperm count. If you typically wear briefs (sometimes referred to as "tighty whiteys"), try boxers or boxer briefs. Also, minimize hot baths and Jacuzzi and sauna use.

Calculate your body mass index (BMI), and start a fitness routine. According to the Mayo Clinic, obesity has been linked to low sperm count. For males, a BMI of 30 or greater is indicative of obesity. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is normal and healthy. You can easily check your BMI at home (click on the link in the Resource section).

Take vitamins. Deficiencies in vitamin C, selenium, zinc and foliate could reduce your sperm count. Talk to your doctor about getting a blood test to determine which vitamins you need to supplement.

    • 4

Refrain from drinking alcohol and taking drugs. Anabolic steroids cause the testicles to shrink, and reduce the production of sperm. Dr. Marilyn Glenville, Ph.D, a Fellow of The Royal Society of Medicine, reports that alcohol is also linked to poor fertility. The Mayo Clinic further indicates that marijuana and cocaine use are known to reduce the quality and number of sperm.

    • 5

Quit smoking. Tobacco smokers are shown to have lower sperm counts compared with nonsmokers, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Tips & Warnings

  • It could take a lot of time and frustration to figure out what's causing your low sperm count. Infertility is nothing to be ashamed of, and your doctor can quickly rule out unlikely causes.

  • You don't even need to be a frequent drug user to affect the quality and quantity of your sperm. Men who have taken cocaine within two years of semen analysis have shown a decreased ability to produce sperm.
