How to Create a Study Area for Your Child

Instilling good study habits at an early age greatly impacts a child's success in school over the years. In order to have good study habits, a child must have a place to call his own where he can do homework, read books or work on arts and crafts projects. Even if your child is in preschool, a creative space will do wonders to encourage her ever-growing imagination. Whether you use a nook of the kitchen, a corner of the living room or part of your child's bedroom, make the space unique, comfortable and, most of all, kid-friendly.

Instructions

    • 1

If your child doesn't already have a routine for doing homework, now is the time to come up with one. Give your child a small snack when he first arrives home; give him some time to tell you about his day while he enjoys his snack; then start homework.

    • 2

Find a space that's quiet and free from a lot of distractions during homework time; a place that's away from the television. Find a corner in the house that has enough space for a small desk and chair or, if space permits, rearrange your child's bedroom and add a desk, chair, waste basket and bookcase. Choose comfortable, functional furniture from a local superstore, a yard sale or thrift store.

    • 3

Add a calendar to the wall near the homework area and encourage your child to put her assignment due dates and activities for the month on it. You can also add family trips and chores.

    • 4

Stock the homework area with supplies like pens, pencils, highlighters, notepads, a calculator, a stapler, dictionary, thesaurus, paperclips, crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue sticks and other items your child may need. Select a lamp for the desk so that your child has adequate light while working on assignments and projects.

    • 5

Decorate the area with your child by your side. Let her pick a color scheme and décor for the space. Hang a picture of her favorite cartoon or book character. If you let your child help you create the space, she will be more likely to embrace it and use it as her own.

    • 6

Help your child keep the area neat and organized. Each afternoon, let him put any supplies he used back where they belong. On weekends, have him tidy the area by dusting and disposing of any trash.

Tips & Warnings
