How to Dispose of Lightbulbs

Household light bulbs include fluorescent and incandescent models. Fluorescent light bulbs, both regular and compact, contain mercury. Mercury is a known hazardous material and should be disposed of correctly and not put directly into landfills. Containment of the bulb is important for the protection of the environment. Incineration of the bulb is never an option because that would release the hazardous material into the atmosphere and allow it to spread it further.

Instructions

    • 1

Place incandescent bulbs inside non-recyclable boxes and containers (detergent boxes work well) to prevent the scattering of glass during a bulb breakage.

    • 2

Dispose of the contained incandescent bulbs by placing them in a curbside trash can.

    • 3

Place compact or regular fluorescent bulbs in their original container or use a label stating "hazardous waste" on a container that was not originally meant for the compact or regular fluorescent.

    • 4

Locate a recycling program for fluorescent light bulbs. There are websites that list recycling programs by state.

    • 5

Deliver the boxed fluorescent bulbs to the recycling center.

Tips & Warnings

  • Business owners with large numbers of bulbs for disposal will need to check state and local regulations. Check with government environmental agencies for further information.
