How to Mix Top Soil
Topsoil is the living layer of earth, a combination of organic and inorganic matter, minerals and water. This delicate and fertile layer of earth is from 5 to 12 inches deep in some geographic locales, and takes over 100 years to form naturally. Topsoil is essential for plant growth and in sustaining an ecological balance on the earth. Gardeners and botanists know the importance of mixing topsoil for optimum plant and crop growth, as well as understanding topsoil components. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Combine equal parts of sand and clay and fill half of a large pot, preferably 2 feet deep. Add 1 qt. of water and mix, then leave overnight to soak.

2
Add 2 lbs. of composted cow manure to the mixture and mix in thoroughly. This is the organic nitrogen-rich matter essential for productive topsoil.

3
Mix in 1 lb. of vermiculite and stir the mixture well, then leave overnight. This will help to aerate the soil for optimum irrigation and water saturation.
-
4
Check the pH level of the topsoil by using a topsoil pH test kit (available at most gardening supply stores). Topsoil pH levels should range between 6.0 and 7.5. Add 1 tsp. of lime if the pH level is below 6.0.
