How to Use a Tens Device

This is an FDA approved approach at managing and relieving pain by cutting off pain signals before they have time to reach the brain. TENS is also said to release natural pain-fighting endorphins. Instructions

  1. How To Use a TENS Device

    • 1

Approach your physician about using a TENS unit. Because TENS units are a drug-free approach to pain management, it comes with no side affects, such as drowsiness or nausea, which are common side affects of pain medication. Your physicians, however, will have to write a script for you to receive a unit.

Learn proper placement for the gel pads and electrodes. Practice with your physician prior to attempting to place the electrodes yourself.

    • 3

Vary your approach. Refrain from using the electrodes in the same place and choose different placement points to prevent skin irritation.

    • 4

Be patient. It generally takes up to 30 minutes to feel any relief from the TENS treatment. Play with the device settings to achieve a voltage and setting that is comfortable for you.

    • 5

Replace the device batteries as needed. Replace the gel pads once a week or according to manufacturer instructions.
