How to Install Pigeon Spikes
Pigeons roosting on your roof or fence can make more than just a mess -- they can pose a health threat. The accumulation of droppings can grow a fungus, that when breathed in, may cause some individuals to develop an infection called Cryptococcus. Installing pigeon spikes onto their favored landing spots is a great way to deter the pigeons humanely. These spikes do not harm the pigeons because the pigeons never land on the spikes. The easiest type of pigeon spike to install involves simply gluing down the spike. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Clean the surface so that it is clear of dirt and bird droppings. Wear a mask so that you do not breathe in the dust from the feces. Make a sudsy solution of soap and water and scrub away the droppings.
-
2
Draw a pencil line of where you want to install the spikes. Use a ruler if needed to keep the line straight and centered.

3
Apply silicone glue to the surface on top of the pencil line. Apply a thick layer of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. If there are any dents or crevices you will need to apply extra glue in those areas. Be sure that the entire spike base sits in glue.
-
4
Attach the length of pigeon spike to the glue by setting the base into the glue line. Press down on the spikes; the glue should seep around and through the base holes.
-
5
Add additional rows of spikes as needed. Pigeons will roost in spaces as small as 2 1/2 inches. Spaces of more than 2 1/2 inches will need another row of spikes.
