While it's not always easy to determine the right hair color, choosing the wrong color is far too easy and is a common mistake, whether done in the salon or at home. The right hair color and highlight color can complement your skin tone and give an overall flawless look to your complexion. According to stylist David Evangelista, one way to determine the best colors for your hair is to first determine if you have a cool or warm skin color. An assessment of eye color, natural hair color, skin tone and even the veins in the arm can give us all the clues needed to avoid the costly and sometimes embarrassing mistake of the wrong hair or highlight color.       Look in the mirror and objectively assess the color of your skin, eyes and hair color (if natural).

      Determine your skin tone by referring to the following guidelines:
      Light/Warm - Light warm skin has yellow-red undertones and may be described as ivory, peaches and cream or creamy beige. Your eye color is likely amber, hazel, green or brown.
      Medium or Deep/Warm - Medium or deep warm skin has yellow-red undertones and may be described as coppery, tawny or golden brown. Your eye color is likely green, amber or dark brown.
      Light/Cool - Light cool skin has a blue-red undertone. It may be described as rosy pink, pearl or rose beige. Your eye color is likely blue, grey-blue or grey-green.
      Medium or Deep/Cool - Medium or deep cool skin is described as olive, dark olive, ebony or dark brown. Your eye color is likely brown, black or a deep hue of blue or green.

      Choose your hair color from the following guidelines:
      People with light/warm skin look best in light colors with warm tones such as strawberry blonde, light beige or golden brown with reddish highlights
      People with medium or deep/ warm skin look best with dark shades such as medium or dark golden brown, chestnut, copper or mahogany with honey highlights.
      People with light/cool skin look best with ashy or silvery blonde colors with platinum highlights.
      People with deep/cool skin look best with brown, black or plum hair with burgundy highlights.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't decide what color skin tone you have look at the veins in your arm. Veins with a bluish tinge indicate you are probably a cool skin tone while greenish veins mean you are most likely warm.
