How to Decorate a Garden Window

How to Decorate a Garden Window thumbnail
Use potted plants to decorate your garden window.

Garden windows are designed to act as small greenhouses. They normally protrude slightly to the exterior of the home, providing places to set plants and seedlings. While they are highly functional, creativity is needed when decorating these focal points. Traditional window treatments do not make much sense because they block the light these windows are designed to let in. Instead, garden pots and cafe valances provide a clean and quaint feel to just about any greenhouse window. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Install your cafe rod above your garden window, just as you would for any other window. Hang your valance. You might wish to press it slightly before hanging if it is wrinkled.

    • 2

Choose coordinated garden pots to sit on the shelves of your garden window. If your room is decorated in blues and greens, try earthenware pots with green and blue glazes. Colorful rooms might benefit from the neutrality and versatility of metallic garden pots.

    • 3

Arrange the larger garden pots on the bottom shelf of your garden window and the smaller pots on the top shelf. This gives the plant arrangement balance that is pleasing to the eye.

    • 4

Temporarily remove your pots from the garden window, then pot your plants using potting soil. Water thoroughly, if applicable. Choose plants that are green or feature flowers that accent your decor. Remember that plants placed in greenhouse windows should be partial or full-sun plants. Shade plants will not thrive in a garden window.

    • 5

Place your potted plants back onto the shelves, keeping smaller plants at the top and larger plants at the bottom.

Tips & Warnings

  • Overcrowding your garden window shelves can make them look sloppy. If the shelves appear cluttered when you put all of your pots onto the shelves, consider moving some of the potted plants to another area of your home or garden.
