How to Set Up Real Estate Signs

Real estate signs an integral part of marketing your listing and your personal business services. If the signs are set up properly, you will draw potential buyers to your listing and open houses. Even if you are selling your own house, use the real estate signs to your advantage. You can place one stationary sign in front of the house at all times, and five to 10 temporary, or A frame signs to advertise each open house. Ask the guests that come through your open house how they found you; a majority will most likely say that they followed the signs.

Order one stationary sign to put in front of the house as soon as it goes up for sale. Some people will actually put the main sign up before the house is technically ready to sell. In this case you can add a rider, or a small addition to the sign stating that it is coming soon. If you work with a real estate company, it will have a sign company to order from. If you do not, there are a number of sign companies that can be found on the Internet or your local phone book. Search for "real estate signs".

Assign a fitting location for the main sign in front of the house that is for sale. They can either be stand alone, where they are hammered into the ground, attached to stair railings or the front of the house, or put inside a front window. The layout of the house and garden will help dictate which kind of sign to use and where to put it. If you live in a planned development, such as a condominium or townhouse, be sure to check the bylaws before displaying a sign as there may be rules as to where to put one.

    • 3

Order five to 10 A frame signs from the same sign company. The more A frame signs the better as signs will increase your visibility, and that of your listing. There are many different A frame models. If you live in a windy area, the signs should be heavy enough that they do not blow over easily. If possible, order the signs with your name and business contact information as well as your company's information.

Write the address of the open house on the sign. Most signs have a designated space to write the address. In some cases, instead of writing directly on the sign with dry erase pens or chalk, you can tape a plastic sleeve to the sign and slide of piece of paper in with the address printed on the paper. Use Microsoft Word to create the printout, which can include the address and date and time of the open house. This way the address will not rub off in rain or from people brushing by it. Leave the plastic sleeve on the sign and change the paper each open house.

Set the A frames out the morning of the open house. Put one in front of the house and one on each corner near the house, especially at busy intersections. Make sure the arrow on the sign is pointing toward the house, and is in an area that is visible but does not disturb the people passing by. Be sure to check local ordinances for where signs can and cannot be placed.
