How to Troubleshoot Adobe Flash on Ubuntu
Adobe Flash is an Internet multimedia platform used for interactive Web content, video games, streaming video and streaming audio. The Flash platform is primarily developed for Windows and Mac OS, leaving much to be desired for Linux-based operating systems like Ubuntu. Performance on Ubuntu is catching up, though there are still numerous issues that users encounter. There are a number of troubleshooting tips that can help ensure that Flash operates smoothly and without errors on Ubuntu.

Remove conflicting Flash plug-ins that may cause stability issues when using Flash by executing the following commands in a Terminal window. You will be prompted to enter your administrative password to complete the commands:
sudo apt-get remove swfdec-mozilla
sudo apt-get remove mozilla-plugin-gnash
sudo apt-get remove adobe-flashplugin
sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree -

Adjust the Flash settings to improve streaming by executing the following commands in a Terminal window. You will be prompted to enter your administrative password to complete the commands:
sudo mkdir /etc/adobe
echo "OverrideGPUValidation=true" >~/mms.cfg
sudo mv ~/mms.cfg /etc/adobe/ -

Install the No Script or FlashBlock Firefox extensions (see Resources) to enhance the performance of Flash. As the use of Flash increases, some websites are including numerous Flash elements that can slow the performance of individual Flash elements like streaming video. By blocking Flash elements, you can selectively enable those Flash objects which you wish to operate.

Tips & Warnings
New versions of Ubuntu come packaged with the Compiz graphics system enabled by default. Some users report improved performance of Flash when disabling or modifying Compiz. Consider switching to a lightweight window manager alternative like MetaCity if Flash performance continues to be an issue.
