How to Repair Baseball Gloves

Most baseball players get comfortable with a glove and want to have their "gamer" with them for every game and practice. It becomes a favorite piece of equipment that they can't do without. That's why learning some basic repairs is important. You don't want to play with a backup or have to buy and break in a new glove on short notice.

Instructions

  1. Laces

    • 1

Learn how to relace your glove, and study the pattern of the laces as they run throughout the mitt. The laces take a lot of abuse, so having a lace pop or break is to be expected. If you can tie a square knot, you can fix your laces.

    • 2

Tie a new lace to one end of the broken lace. Feed the new lace into the next hole in the pattern and pull it through with tweezers, or affix the new piece of lace into the end of the threading needle and push the needle through the next hole. Continue threading the new lace as far as desired.

    • 3

Pull the repaired area tight. Tie another knot that is large enough to prevent the lace from slipping back through. Trim the lace from the knot's tag end if necessary.

    Palm Padding

    • 4

Add padding to the palm of the glove when the area has taken so much abuse that you feel pain when catching a hard throw or a hard-hit ball.

    • 5

Take out the palm of the glove by unstitching that area.

    • 6

Insert foam padding. Use a long needle that can plunge through leather to stitch padding in place.

    • 7

      Replace the leather palm.

    Webbing

    • 8

Replace the web of the glove as needed. This may be necessary after two to three years of use.

    • 9

Replace the T-style web or an H-style web with any style you like, if you so desire.

    • 10

Use leather cord to replace the webbing, if you like, by fitting it back in the spot of the old web.

Tips & Warnings

  • Care for glove: Recondition the glove with a glove oil. Baseball gloves are often subjected to the elements, such as rain and sun. The leather can become hard and crack. Keep the glove well-lubricated by rubbing the oil in once a month if you play in a lot of tough weather conditions or if your glove takes a lot of physical abuse. Glove oil will keep the leather supple.
