How to Customize a Vanity Plate for a Car

The simplest way to add a unique, personalized touch to your automobile might be a vanity license plate. Almost any word or phrase you could think of that fits within your home state's number of spaces can be put right on your car for only a few dollars a year.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of five or more vanity plate ideas you would like for your custom license plate. If you have one top choice already, think of some other ways to spell it or symbols you could add to it for other alternatives just in case your top choice is not available. Think of unique ways to make other letters or numbers work for you. For example, use the number 1 instead of the letter "L" or the letter "I."

    • 2

Search the internet for your state's vanity plate registration site by typing, for example, "Texas vanity plates" or "California vanity plates available" into your search engine. Within the results, locate the website directly associated with your state's department of motor vehicles or department of public safety.

    • 3

Check your state's vehicle website for options for your custom license plate. Most states will have two options: a list of pre-made custom backgrounds for your license plates (such as different scenic backgrounds, collegiate backgrounds or charity backgrounds) and a link to "personalized plates" where you may choose your own word for your plate. Note that you can usually both select a pre-made background and also choose your own word if desired.

    • 4

Check the availability of all of your plate phrases. If none of your ideas are available, check back -- if a certain plate is dropped by the driver that's been using it, it will go back into the system for you to use at a later time. If you're unable to wait, continue brainstorming alternative ways to phrase your vanity plate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Read the guidelines for the plates on your state's website before testing availability of words that might be deemed vulgar.

  • Check if your state has symbols, such as hearts or stars, available to add to your plate.
