How to Add Background Color on Macromedia Dreamweaver 8

Why settle for dull black-on-white web pages when you can design your website using an alternative color scheme? This tutorial will show you how to choose different background colors and give you practical design considerations for which colors work best. You can choose from any of 256 background colors, but you still need to keep in mind which colors will make text readable. This guide will show you how to select the right background and text colors using Macromedia Dreamweaver 8.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 and open a new file by selecting "File" and "New" from the menu. The New Document dialogue box appears. Select the default category "Basic page" and "HTML," then press the "Create" button.

    • 2

Locate and click on the "Page properties" button at the bottom of the Dreamweaver desktop. A dialogue box appears with "Appearance" as the default selection.Click on the small box next to "Background color." A color picker tool appears, with your cursor becoming an eyedropper.

    • 3

Experiment with some colors. Begin by placing the eyedropper over something in the yellow family from the color palette. Press the "OK" button.

    • 4

View the results. Your page should now be yellow. Type some text to confirm your selection. Default black text works well on top of yellow, but consider the long term effect of your selection: Is yellow easy on the eyes?

Yellow is considered a color your eyes are most sensitive to and might cause viewers to quickly fatigue. Even though black text can be easily read over yellow, the long-term effects of this background color might be undesirable.

    • 5

Repeat Step 2. Instead of yellow, select black. With black as your background color, eye fatigue may be reduced, but your text disappears. To change the color of your text, highlight the text you typed in the previous step and select "Text" and "Color" from the menu. Select white from the Color dialogue box. Your text now is visible.

Experiment with different background and text colors until you have a theme you are comfortable with and that doesn't fatigue the eye after prolonged viewing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind that white is the most popular background color because of the ease with which other graphics and images can be integrated. Many logos and clip art are created over white backgrounds, so no additional work is required adding them to a website. Alternate colors will require adjustments be made to your graphic images so they reflect the correct background color.
