There are many different problems that could be affecting a broken gate. Resetting all of the key parts (hinges, latch, posts and the gate itself) will ensure a full repair. Detach the gate from its hinges and latch. Use a screwdriver or a ratchet (depending on your hardware) to remove screws from the gate and fence posts. Save all screws for reuse, but discard any damaged or broken components. If necessary, purchase replacement parts from your local hardware store.

Use a level to check for leaning in the fence posts that held up your gate. Both posts need to be level to create a solid frame for your fence. If a post is leaning, use a tamp bar to push it back into place. Use the flat end of the bar to pack the dirt around the base of the post. Apply pressure to the post as you pack the dirt, and force it into place. For additional support, pack crushed stone around the base of both posts.

With the posts back in place, reattach the hinges to the gate. Make sure the hinges are flat and flush against the gate before screwing them down. If they are warped or bent, attach new hinges. Place a level on top of the gate, and attach the hinges to the fence post, making sure the gate is level as you insert screws.
